Bass Note Trainer
Learn the notes on the bass neck one string at a time. Name the highlighted note, or find the note you're asked for. Start with the E and A strings — that's where most bass lines find their roots.
Shortcuts for learning the bass neck
A bass in standard tuning has the same four strings as the lowest four on a guitar — E A D G, an octave lower. The notes go A B C D E F G, with one fret between each pair — except B–C and E–F, which sit right next to each other. At the 12th fret everything starts over, one octave higher.
Two shapes find the rest: the same note sits five frets higher on the string below (A string fret 0 = E string fret 5), and the octave is two strings up and two frets higher.
Next step: see scales on the bass neck, or play the bass line to a chord progression — the backing leaves the bass out for you.
